From Doing to Being: Embracing the Winter Slowdown

As we step into the new year, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of resolutions and productivity goals. But if we look to nature and the natural rhythms of the seasons, winter is actually a time for rest and reflection. In many cultures and even astrologically, this is a period of hibernation, a chance to nourish our bodies and minds, and build up energy for the months ahead.
Yet, the external world often pushes us to be constantly active and productive. It can feel like a contradiction. But embracing the essence of 'being' by taking time to reflect, slow down, and recharge can actually set the stage for more meaningful and sustainable productivity later on.
For the first time in years, I am allowing myself to embrace my need for retreat, rest and following a slower pace for just a little bit longer. It's not always easy to do that, especially when work demands a lot. But even small moments of rest can make a big difference. Here is what currently helps me:
🧘🏻♀️ Morning Mindfulness
Start the day with a few minutes of meditation or deep breathing. This helps center my mind and set a calm tone for the day.
🌳 Nature Breaks
Take short, mindful walks outside, even if it's just a few minutes. Connecting with nature can be grounding and refreshing. Plus I get some proper daylight and fresh air, which my body appreciates.
🌙 Evening Reflection
Before going to bed, I take a few minutes to journal about my day, focusing on gratitude and what I have learned, rather than what I have accomplished.
📵 Digital Detox
I do set aside specific times in the morning and evening and sometimes on the weekend where I switch off my phone, allowing my mind to rest and reset. I can highly recommend phone free walks!
🥗 Nourishing Foods
Especially during the colder months, I try to focus on warm and cooked drinks and meals. I love adding spices that bring warmth to my body such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, black pepper and turmeric.
🛏️ Prioritizing Sleep
In winter, our bodies naturally need more rest. Shorter days and less sunlight increase melanin production, signaling us to slow down and recharge. Instead of pushing through fatigue, honoring sleep is a form of self-regulation, not laziness. Going to bed a little earlier, creating a calming evening routine, or allowing gentler mornings when possible can make a big difference. More rest now helps rebuild energy and resilience for the more active seasons ahead.
It is not about doing everything all the time - some days I don't do any of the above and others I manage more. Be gentle with yourself and find what works best for you. Small rituals can really help cultivate a sense of balance and well-being and align with the natural rhythm of the season.
How do you incorporate moments of rest into your daily routine?
